1870-1880 Essay -- Essays Papers
1870-1880 During the 1870ââ¬â¢s the United States experienced great changes with the end of the Civil War. America was going through a period called Reconstruction. Tensions were fairly high and an air of freedom was present throughout the nation. By 1877, it was obvious the United States was beginning to develop into a recognizably modern economic system of making, earning, spending, and living (Brown 60). In 1880, ââ¬Å"over half of American workers worked on farms and only one in twenty worked on manufacturingâ⬠(Brown 59). Farmers outnumbered factory by a large number, but factories were still abundant. Child labor occurred after the Civil War as well. By 1872, more than 10,000 children were employed in Philadelphiaââ¬â¢s industrial workplaces. That number was even larger in cities such as New York, and it increased as the years progressed (Brown 60). The decade of 1870-1880 consisted of many important issues in American history. Industrialization began to make to makes its way into the American colony. In 1870, the first transcontinental railroad trip in the United States took place. The transcontinental railroad brought America together. This made it easier for traveling and especially made it easier for the industries by being able to commute products back and forth. The transcontinental railroad was the best invention and had a great impact of life for the United States at this time. Another great event that happened for this country was the discovery of gold in 1874. The discovery of gold in the Dakota Territory brought thousands of gold diggers into the Black Hills reservation. Another very important invention that changed America was the telephone on March 10, 1876, by Alexander Graham Bell. This allowed Ameri... ...ccording to Perkins, although French and Russian realists and naturalists influenced James style, ââ¬Å"in Contrast to the European naturalists whose tutelage he acknowledged, he rebelled against the materialistic interpretation of human destiny, and struggled with the problem of undeniable evil as desperately as Hawthorne, whom, among earlier Americans he most admiredâ⬠(Perkins 1055). This shows that James was greatly influenced by Europeans, but he also has his added his own unique American style. One of Jamesââ¬â¢ stories, ââ¬Å"Daisy Miller," takes place in Switzerland. Throughout this story Europeans see America as being hostile and somewhat harsh. During the decade between 1870 and 1880 , the United States was once again beginning to rebuild the nation. This rebuilding or reconstruction not only affected attitudes, but it affected art and literature throughout the world.
Essay --
France is considered a very prosperous nation. The prosperity of this nation was mostly from the huge economic changes that were made after the 1940ââ¬â¢s. This was because the French government started to modernize the economy. They developed new methods of production and trade through a series of national plans. Although, they still have macroeconomic problems just like every other country. Macroeconomics are economic concepts and theories that apply to the economy as a whole. Macroeconomic problems are issues such as inflation, balance of payments disequilibrium, fluctuations in exchange rates, depreciation in currency, and the decision as to whether a country should have a floating or managed exchange rate. However, France's leaders remain committed to a capitalism in which they maintain social equity by means of laws, tax policies, and social spending that mitigate economic inequality. Franceââ¬â¢s main source of currency is the Euro. As with most countries, France does their best to base their currency off the U.S. Dollar. As of 2011 (World Book Encyclopedia), the Euro was equal with the U.S. Dollar. Unfortunately, since then the value of the Euro has declined over the years. According to the exchange rate, in 2012 it was at .78, and in 2013 it was at .76. This shows that the Euro is depreciating. This follows into the matter of inflation. France has an inflation rate for consumer prices of 1.1% (2014). This apparently went down over the last year as in 2012, it was at 2.2%. Even though, this is relatively low, which is why they are such a prosperous nation. They are especially low when comparing their inflation rate with some countries such as Zimbabwe, who has an inflation rate of 8.5% (2013). Compared to the w... ...g opposed active exchange rate intervention. Hollande then contradicted their point of view by saying ââ¬Å"reform of the international monetary system was indispensable.â⬠He feels that France needs to decide on medium-term exchange rate and act on an international level to protect their own interests. There is the fear in several countries that single currency countries whose efforts to improve their competitiveness could be destroyed by the Euro, which has been rising in value. This fear may soon be put to rest though, as the Euro has had recent strength. The macroeconomic problems in France are relatively minor compared to the ones of other countries. Despite stagnant growth and fiscal challenges, France's borrowing costs have declined in recent years because investors remain attracted to the liquidity of Franceââ¬â¢s bonds. Thus, they are a fairly strong country.

Triumph of Good in Captain Corellis Mandolin Essay -- Captain Corelli
Triumph of Good in Captain Corelli's Mandolinà à Despite a backdrop of war, many characters in "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" are essentially good. This goodness in many characters overcomes the difficulties within relationships and the difficulties posed by war. De Bernià ¨res shows the triumphant nature of this goodness through his characters as they interact and develop relationships with one another. The island of Cephallonia has been able to survive through a history full of invasions. Its population has triumphed and shows itself to be basically good. Although at one point they ridicule Father Arsenios when Velisarios humiliates him by lifting him up, there is no malice in their actions. They come to the church to leave "tokens of apology" for Father Arsenios and their goodwill to one another continues throughout the course of the novel. Despite the prejudice of society not allowing Carlo Guercio to live as freely as a homosexual as he would wish, his goodness triumphs as he is able to care for those he loves. When his love, Francesco, dies, Guercio's kind and loving nature comes through as he buries him with his mouse and goes to his mother to tell her of her son's death. He is kind enough to spare her from the truth about the brutality of her son's death, saying that "he died with a smile on his lips". Despite losing his loved one, Guercio's strong character and goodness allow him to go on and love again. This time the object of his affection is Captain Corelli, for whom he eventually sacrifices his life. Captain Corelli's goodness is evident from his first appearance despite the fact that he is a captain of the occupying force. As he marches his troops through the streets of Cephallonia, he breaks the tension by... ...elagia lives to the end of the novel, surviving the war and an earthquake . During the wartime, she and her father socialise with Italian and German soldiers. She uses her medical knowledge to help Mandras and the captain. Pelagia seems to have time for anything and has passionate feelings. She cares deeply for Lemoni and her pets too. The triumphant goodness of human life is evident in many character's lives as they overcome obstacles through their own determination and goodwill. Characters such as Carlo Guercio live not only for themselves, but to comfort others too as he ensures that he tells Francesco's mother that her son died peacefully. The generosity of many characters transcends timeframes as well as age barriers meaning that they help people through their lifetime meaning that more people than just themselves are able to achieve their aims in life. The Role of a Guardian
Guardianship is a legal relationship between a competent adult and a person over the age of 18 and whose disability causes them to make irrational decisions. The incompetent person is called the ward. The disability may he caused by mental illness, developmental disability, accident, or other causes. A developmental disability or mental illness is not, alone by itself enough reason to call someone incompetent. Even advanced stages of alcoholism is reason enough to find a guardian or some other kind of court intervention in that persons life. Competency has to do with a person's ability to make an ââ¬Ëinformed decision', or, with the risk of arm that they may experience due to their inability to provide for themselves or control their business. The court has the right to make the guardian last indefinitely. The only way to end it is to have the court end it. The only way that they do that is where the child reaches the age of majority and then they don't need a guardian or if the incapacitated person dies. The incapacitated person could also get better and then they wouldn't need a guardian any more In the relationship between the guardian and the ward, the guardian is given the right to make decisions on behalf of the person with a disability. When a guardian is appointed, the ourt gives the guardian the authority to exercise certain legal rights in the wards best interest. The courts, when giving rights to a guardian, take them away from the ward. Because guardianship involves such a serious deprivation of rights and dignity, the law requires that guardianship be executed only when other, less restrictive alternatives have proven not to work. If less restrictive forms of protection are not enough to protect a person from the risk of harm, then guardianship should be sought on behalf of the incapacitated person. A guardian's authority is limited to those areas of decision making for which there is vidence to indicate that a person is incapacitated. Some incapacitated people are able to make responsible decisions in some, but not all, areas of their lives. In these situations guardianship may be limited by the court to only those areas in which the incapacitated person is unable to make responsible decisions. Some individuals require a guardian who has responsibility for both the person and the estate. The primary responsibility of the guardian with duties pertaining to the ward is to provide consent for issues such as medical treatment and living situation. A uardian of the estate is responsible for managing some or all of the property and/or income of There are three different kinds of guardianship. The first kind is the most common type and that is plenary guardianship. Plenary guardianship or complete guardianship is when the ward has very little capacity and the guardian makes all the important decisions. People found to be totally without capacity or understanding to make personal decisions or manage financial affairs, are given plenary guardians. In determining a need for person guardianship, two prominent issues are medical decision making and residential placement. If a person is unable to give informed medical consent or is unable to live independently in an appropriate residence, person guardianship should be Estate guardianship is necessary where a person, due to some disability, cannot manage financial affairs. However, courts rarely appoint plenary estate guardians where estate assets are minimal. Bill paying assistance and money management assistance programs should also be considered before you seek an estate guardian. Small estate amounts can be collected and disbursed, without resort to estate administration. Some courts encourage the use of small estate ffidavits and court-supervised deposits of wards' funds as alternatives to estate guardianship. However, as stated before, many judges rarely appoint estate guardians in small or minimal Perhaps the least understood and least used form of guardianship applies where a person lacks some, but not all of the capacity to make personal decisions or handle an estate, the appointment of a limited guardian is not a finding of legal incompetence. Limited guardianship is intended to be less severe and more individualized than plenary guardianship. Although guardianship is supposed to be used only to the extent necessary by a person's ctual mental, physical and social limitations, courts tend to create plenary guardianship rather than limited guardianship, even where limited guardianship may arguably be more appropriate. One reason for the bias toward plenary guardianship is that the creation of an appropriate limited guardianship is complicated when compared to plenary guardianship. A physician must clearly state between things a person can and cannot do and must clearly describe these things to the court. The court must then determine which of these rights will be taken from the person with disability, considering the consequences for each. The limited guardianship must be understandable to the guardian, ward and other parties that may depend on the document. Not all guardianship practitioners, medical practitioners and courts are able to make an appropriate, The following are some better alternatives, which should be considered before pursuing guardianship. Representative or Protective Payee is a person who is appointed to manage Social Security, Veterans' Administration, Retirement, Welfare Assistance or other state or Federal benefits or entitlement program payments on behalf of an individual. Conservatorship is a oluntary proceeding in which a person (the conservatee) asks the Court to appoint a specific individual (the conservator) to manage his or her estate. The court must find the ward incapable of managing his or her financial affairs, but capable of making the decision to have a conservator appointed to do so these actions. Power of Attorney is a contract between two individuals where one party gives to the other the authority to make any number of decisions (e. g. medical, placement, financial) on his or her behalf. The person giving the power of attorney must be mentally competent to enter into the contract as learned in this class. If the contract is made and the six essential elements of a contract are met, the power of attorney remains in effect even if the principal becomes mentally incapacitated. Here is a case where some kind of guardianship or another court related act would have to take place. A person with Alzheimer's disease often loses all short-term memory and gradually loses even long-term memory. That person cannot make responsible decisions such as remembering to take medication or remembering to pay bills. If that person did not execute a power of attorney while he or she still had the legal capacity to do so, the only way for a family ember to take over bill payments or seek medical assistance for the disabled person is to execute a guardianship through court intervention. In conclusion there are very many things you have to consider before you try to become a legal guardian. You must first think of what is in the best interests of the ward. Then, if you can, you should try to find some better, less restricting options, for him or her. Being a guardian to a child or a mentally disabled person is a big responsibility and should not be taken lightly. There are businesses and law firms, which can help you, research and become a guardian.

Critique of Gallery Shows of Asian Art Essay
Asian art can refer to the vast genre of art and artists throughout the Asian continent. The history of Asian art is as varied as the cultures that make up this region of the world. From ancient bronze sculptures in India to the Manga cartoons of Japan, each country has a distinctive perspective on the world around them. In this paper I will look at three proposals for gallery shows of Asian art, each completely unique in their view of Asian culture. The first group looks at ââ¬Å"Pop culture in Asiaâ⬠focusing on the works of artists Wang Guangyi, Satoshi Kon, Takashi Murakami, and Basak Aditya, as well the art of Japanese tattoos. Organizing such conflicting works together seems disjointed and lacking coherence. Indeed the idea of Pop culture in Asia could be defined in multiple ways, but this grouping lacks consistency and logic. Works by Wang Guangyi, Satoshi Kon and Takashi Murakami, each with their pop art style and references, would be a good match for a show focusing on pop culture. Wang Guangyi reinvents propaganda posters from the 1960ââ¬â¢s and 70ââ¬â¢s into capitalist propaganda posters, using the same triangular composition and palette. Takashi Murakami is known for his sculptures of highly stylized cartoon or invented characters, referring to the popular culture of Japan or contemporary films. Satoshi Kon is a director of animated films that are loaded with Japanese cultural references and symbolism. I believe the work of these three artists would have been enough for a succinct show of Pop culture in Asia. The addition of the works of Basak Aditya and Japanese tattoos makes this grouping lose its focus. Although the work of Basak Aditya, with his poetic landscapes and dream-like portraits, is interesting, it is not a good fit because they are too personalized and make no references to the pop culture of India. And finally the addition of Japanese tattoos just seems like an arbitrary decision. Although some tattoos may have pop cultural references, the inclusion of photographs of skin art is incompatible with the cohesion of the first three artists in the grouping. The next group ââ¬Å"Art and Powerâ⬠successfully showed a variety of artwork that represented power throughout the ages. Beginning with paintings from the Chinese era of emperors and using concise language to demonstrate their interpretation of power. This group then looks at the brass and copper sculptures of Buddha, Shiva, and Jambhala, clearly demonstrating the power of religion in the regions of Tibet and India. Next are a grouping of decorative and ceremonial items from Korea, signifying the power of the ruling and upper-classes of ancient Asia. This grouping ends with a group of painting and sculpture of samurais and two thangka paintings. The overall consistency of the objects and paintings used for this grouping makes for a successful exhibition. All the works chosen were clearly indicative of power in this well organized grouping. Finally the last group chose ââ¬Å"Asian Animationâ⬠as a theme. Again this is a clear and well put together group of mostly Japanese cartoons and figures. This group first looks at the work of Satoshi Trajiri, and the media franchise of Pokemon. This group clearly spent time on creating colorful cartoon-like backgrounds to add to their clear, well planned presentation. They then look at the illustration work of Akira Toriyama and his colorful, well defined sharp edge illustrations. The group then looks at toys and costumes that are created from these cartoons and comics, again using a similar background to unify the presentation. Although some of the content is repeated at the end of the grouping, the overall vision of presenting these comics and cartoons as art forms is cohesive and easy to understand. The group points out how important comics as an industry is to Japan and their cultural affects throughout the world.

A Separate Peace
In ââ¬Å"A Separate Peaceâ⬠, John Knowles uses the characters come to understand the difference between fantasy and reality, innocence andà experience, and sympathy and hatred. Phineas uses denial to protect himself against the reality of war. One person can need protection to hide from anà experienceà that's been haunting their lives like a death in the family. They need this protection to help them move on in life and find peace within themselves again. Some need protection from war in the thought of death during battle. This kind of protection is more physical then emotional in that it's asking for protection that would shield any bullet that couldà enter theà body. Others need an emotional type of protection from jealousy and hatred and toà escapeà their fears and from truth. This could be needed to help one get through the day and live without having to hide from other people's jealousy and hatred. In ââ¬Å"A Separate Peaceâ⬠by John Knowles, Phineas nee ds protection from the truth and reality. With this, John Knowles compares reality and the truth by exhibiting the cast as a barrier that protects Phineas from the world around him, as well as the thing of craziness and reality, of innocence andà knowledge, and of love and disgust. Phineas' defensive attitude towards the war and life in general is a resultà of his anxious character not wanting to accept the changes around him, leading him into denial for his friendship with Gene and the world outside the Devon school. When Phineas hears about the war, he puts himself into complete denial as he tells Gene, ââ¬Å"Don't be a sap,' he gazed with cool self-possession at me, ââ¬Ëthere isn't any warâ⬠¦ that's what this whole war story is a horrible drugâ⬠(107). Phineas doesn't believe that there is a war going on. This is one of the things that Phineas hides and can't face. Towards the end, Phineas tells Gene that the one thing Phineas is mad about is not being able to do a nything once he breaks his leg again, is that he can't go away to war. This shows that Phineas probably told Gene that he didn't believe in war to hide his real emotions. When Phineas shows that he is in denial about reality and can't handle the truth, Gene states, ââ¬Å"To begin joking, would have been a hypocritical denial, of what had happened, and Phineas was not capable of thatâ⬠(109). Gene doesn't think that Phineas can take the truth and won't accept reality. This shows the way Gene sees Phineas as a person, who can't handle reality and who is living his life in denial.Phineas was in such a mind state that he couldn't even be joked around with as aà resultà of his unbearable attitude towards his leg situation. As the fact of reality, when Phineas was pushed from the tree by Gene, he started to be seen before him, Phineas cries, ââ¬Å"I don't care,' Phineas interrupted in an even voice, so full of richness that it overrode all the others. I don't careâ⬠(168) I nstead of facing the fact that he was pushed out of the tree and move on to other things, he dwelled on the past, not believing anything. This shows the way Phineas views his life and his attitude towards the world, which was that he spends his time successively from the truth about how he fell from the tree and that there isn't a war occurring around him. Phineas lives his life by hiding from the truth, the cast acting like a barrier keeping him away from accepting the differences, both emotional and physical, thatà resultà from his broken leg. The cast represents his deception of Gene, reality, and what makes him realize that he will never be able to play the sports that play a key part in his life. When Phineas is notified that he will never be able to play sports again, all he wants is someone to carry his sportsmanship for him, and that is when he tells Gene, ââ¬Å"Listen, pal, if I can't play sports; you're going to play them for me,' and I lost apart of myself to him then and a soaring sense of freedom, revealed that this might have been my purpose from the first; to become a part of Phineasâ⬠(77). Phineas loses the ability to play sports and wants Gene to do that for him, but Phineas also loses his innocence..He feels as if his whole purpose after Phineas' accident was to become a part of him and do what he no longer will be able to do. It suddenly occurs to Gene that Phineas may never be able to walk again, let alone play sports, and this is when he states, ââ¬Å"Then my eyes fell on the bound cast white mass pointing at me, and as it was always to do, it brought me down out of Finny's world of creation, down again as I had fell after awakening that morning, down to reality, to the factsâ⬠(107 and 108).Gene didn't realize the outcome of his actions toward Phineas until Gene saw Phineas' side. Finny had a world of creation where he wouldn't face the truth and the cast acted like a barrier that sustains Phineas from facing the truth. Whe n Phineas tells Gene his feelings of hatred towards him, Gene's description of Phineas is, ââ¬Å"He struggled clumsily for such a length of time that even my mind, slowed and shocked as if it had been, was able to formulate two realizations: that his leg was boundâ⬠¦ nd that he was struggling to unleash his hate against meâ⬠(176). Gene knows about Phineas' feelings of hatred towards him and how Phineas feels about the whole accident. The act wasn't only a barrier for the truth, but a wall that was trying to unleash his hate for Gene and for what he did to Phineas' wonderful life.
